Third-generation Holocaust representation: Trauma, history, and memory.
This chapter investigates how Foer’s choice of the two narrators and diversified genres works towards curbing absolutist ideas and opening up the space for the multiplicity of voices to be heard and for silenced memories and pasts to be unveiled. This chapter is divided into three sections, investigating Foer’s take on: (1) Jewish obsession with remembrances, presented as paralyzing (2) the historical divide among generations and among Jewish and non-Jewish factions, which allow/s for the multiplicity of memories and perspectives to participate in a dialogic exchange, structured as a multi-voiced and multi-genre narrative-as fictional yizker-yielding to “collective creation” Amian (2008, 189) and (3) intergenerational and transgenerational transfer of traumatic memories in the progeny of the Holocaust survivors. This chapter discusses how Jonathan Safran Foer in his novel Everything Is Illuminated (2002) deals with the heritage of Holocaust memories and postmemories, stressing their significance to Jewish identity and tracing the problematic notion of victimhood and complicity in Gentile population under National Socialism.
